Dunno if its the revamp or the spread of tumblr, but it really seems like DevART is less active than it used to be. There's fewer views, fewer favorites, fewer deviations. Maybe it's just that I'm involved less, so I interact with people here less?

It just seems weird.

So as I keep mentioning incessantly, I decided recently to publish the YA novel I've been working on for a while, and as part of that, I decided to ditch my pen name in favor of something less ridiculous and more like my real name.

I liked the name Afalstein, and it worked as a distinctive username, but it's reaaaaaaally cringeworthy in the real world, so I think it's time for a change.

I have a story published!  "Lost in Translation," about a hero who finds out they made a mistake translating the prophecy and that he's NOT actually the chosen one!  It's been published by Escape Artists on their podcast Cast of Wonders!  Go listen to it here!

Being a writer has been my ultimate ambition for... an insanely long time.  A couple people have even commented on my pictures that I'm a much better writer than artist (which... ouch, but true).  And I'm still a long ways off from that goal, but it feels great to be making some tangible progress toward it.  Some other progress--I'm wrapping up work on the children's picture book on "The Rules of Courtly Love" (which probably is going to end up being one of those electronic kids books no one buys), and I'm currently revising the novel I finally sat down and wrote, based on the "Machinations" series I've posted about here from time-to-time.  It feels weird... really weird, to be starting to realize some of these goals, even if there are still a lot of hurdles to go through before I can even check to see if they'll be successful.

But it feels good.  And I'm hoping it keeps going.

Setup changes.

Hoo boy, haven't done one of these for a while.  Three years, maybe?

Okay, so the big news I wanted to get out was this: I have a Xanga account.  I've been thinking to get a blog for some years, and enough people I know use Xanga already, so I thought it was time.  I'm a little disappointed--I'd hoped to provide links to my other accounts on there, and I can't find out how--but I think it should be fun.  If you guys are interested you can check it out here:

afalstein.xanga.com/

The other little tidbit of information is this: I'm not going to be around here so much.  Due to a combination of influences, chief of which is how much time I've wasted here, I'm going to attempt a self-inflicted ritual of only checking my DevART account on Thursdays.  Whether that'll work or not remains to be seen, but for the time being, don't be surprised if it takes me a while to get back to you.

Okay, this is a completely pointless Journal Entry, but I haven't done much else on DArt for a while, and it's kinda funny, so I might as well put it down.

See, my screen name, "Afalstein", is supposed to be a character in Ivanhoe, who's a fat, old thane of noble lineage, reaching back to Harold, the Saxon King.  He is engaged to marry Rowena, the heroine, but towards the end, he realizes she doesn't love him and rather good-naturedly gives her over to Ivanhoe, the hero.  (duh)

All well and good.  He's a fun character and he needs more attention.  But the guy's name is actually spelled "Athalstane"  which actually makes more sense, but sounds like the one I have.  This basically means that, by trying to be clever and not checking up on my facts, I have made a complete fool of myself, as this is pretty much the name I use across the internet.

Which is actually kinda funny, when you think about it.  Anyway, I think MY version looks cooler, and it's too much work to change it, so it's staying that way.  Maybe I'll invent something about it later.
