'I walk the Line'

Description

"There is a fine line," Mark was fond of saying. "between genius and insanity."

"And Jehu," Reverend was fond of replying, "Is a tightrope walker."

In all fairness to Pastor John, the statement was not without merit. Jehu, while indeed perhaps the most knowledgeable of the Four, was probably also the most unstable.

Jehu, as far as anyone had dared to inquire, had never had any formal schooling of any kind, but had practically grown up with a monkey wrench in his hand. He was reputed to be able to figure out the workings of nearly anything simply by looking at it, and was the best electrician, engineer, or car mechanic within fifty miles of anywhere. Recently, under Jeb's guidance, he had also taken up gunsmithing, though results as yet were mixed.

Folks came from all over to the junkyard for his help. His office hours were uncertain and his office strongly resembled a 20's era mobile home, but still they came and he was willing and ready to help all--provided they could pay. Jehu was an unflinching businessman and saw no reason to be anything else.

Jehu could probably have been a millionaire if he had been so inclined, except for one unfortunate fact. The man had the disposition of a crocodile with a root canal. He drank whiskey by the gallon and cigarettes by the dozen, but neither seemed to account for his temper, which flamed up occasionally, randomly, and violently.

Perhaps this was part of why he had come to Sandstone Springs. It was no secret he had left Flagration Ridge under a heap of trouble, and was in no hurry to return to it. Details were sketchy, but most believed he had been caught snooping around one of the military bases in the area and left as quickly as possible. Everyone in Sandstone knew he had no family, and if he had had any friends in Flagration they did not remember him. Jehu had been heard to mutter he wished they never did.

There was one point on which no one had yet managed to learn anything, and that was Jehu's one eye. Mark had once asked about it in passing, but the result left him with no desire to try again. Some folks said it was the result of an unfortunate operations, others said Jehu had done it just to prove he could, and some few whispered he had been born with the thing. (Vern said the aliens had stuck it on, but he was a crazy old hermit and said an awful lot of stuff.)

Nevertheless, despite his instability, Jehu lent an essential fire to the team that drove them on to more than they would otherwise. And whatever else you might say about the man, he was a doggone good shooter.

Weee! Finally! I told you I'd get a cowboy up this week!

This is Jehu Retribution's character profile. Yes, that's actually his name, and there is an explanation. He's one of the more... complex characters in my story, though i don't know if that came through so well. You get an idea of what he does from the picture though.

The gun on the workshop, by the way, is not mine, but another CAD by my freind ~malmida, a gatling gun called "Nightmare" It's designed off an airplane engine and... ah, you can just read the description here: [link] Read it if you're into that stuff, I think it's kinda cool.

Anyway. I'll post the last of these next week. Really. Sorry the links aren't working, something's messed up here.

The writing does get Jehu's insanity through to the reader and also his intellectual nature. The picture is extremely in character for a crazed genius, and has many little details thrown in such as the FRAGILE on the box and the half-emptied whiskey bottle. I only have 3 gripes.

1. The backlight of the car and the tank blend.

2. The tube for the welder is too long

3. Both cars are green

Seriously though, This piece is a humdinger. *favs*
