Occupy Gotham

Description

Unless you live under a rock or something, you've by now probably seen the trailer to "Dark Knight Rises," Nolan's sequel to wildly popular "The Dark Knight Returns." If you've spent enough time on the internet, you probably also know how some people are talking about Catwoman's words in the trailer, about the rich "living so large and leaving so little for the rest of us." The Occupy Wall Street movement have claimed a lot of resonance with that statement, and a lot of people are suddenly pointing to Catwoman (and by extension Bane) as symbols of the Occupy Wall Street movement.

I'm a trifle curious as to what sort of movement willingly identifies itself with an anarchist thug and a leisure criminal. Granted, Bane's a lot more than *just* a thug (SO cool to see a movie that treats him as more than a Hulk), and Catwoman's always been in a grey area morally, but neither one of them are particularly civic-minded citizens. Catwoman's never shown much concern for anything outside of animal rights, and Bane... Bane looks out for Bane. Period.

Mind you, I think the idea of choosing a thug and a thief to represent the Occupy Wall Street movement is a great idea--John Galt would consider it rather fitting--but I'm just rather surprised that they willingly do so. Especially since Batman, everyone's favorite dark avenger, is both canonically and metaphorically the dreaded 1% that's always being maligned. Again, I consider this all very accurate and fitting, I'm just at a loss to understand why the Occupy movement decided to characterize itself that way.

So I've been puzzling over this for a while, and this image popped into my head, and I finally drew it out in my spare time, and here you are! There was going to be a crowd of people rushing toward Bane and Selina, yelling "Our heroes!" but I decided that'd be too much work.

I've been toying around with a simpler art form for a while now. I like being able to sketch stuff--it's a very versatile medium, and allows for a lot of nuances---but at the same time I'd like to be able to do quick, simple cartoons that get the point across right away. The Gunnerkrigg picture was one shot at that sort of art style, and here we have the next one. It's getting better, I think. It would be cool if I could really get it down, it'd be very helpful if I wanted to do a webcomic or something.

And I know Catwoman looks wonky. I couldn't get her to lean on Bane's shoulder convincingly. I didn't mean for Bane to come out quite so short, either... I hear that Tom Hardy, who'll be playing Bane, is slightly shorter than Christian Bale, so I did want him to be shorter, but he looks really squat. He's smiling, too, but you can't tell under his mask-respirator-muzzle.
