Alas, My Axe is Notched

Description

Suddenly there was a great shout, and down from the Dike came those who had been driven back into the Deep. There came Gamling the Old, and Eomer son of Eomund, and beside them walked Gimli the dwarf. He had no hlem, and about his head was a linen band stained with blood; but his voice was loud and strong.

"Forty-two, Master Legolas!" he cried. "Alas! My axe is notched, for the forty-second had an iron collar on his neck."

*****

He passed Legolas' count by one, in case you haven't read the book (or seen the extended cut of the movie, where Gimli has 43 to Legolas' 42).

Neither the book nor the movie truly captured the tragedy of Helms Deep, I felt. Forget the death of Hama, forget the men who's bodies were hewn as they lay at the gates of the Hornburg, forget all the farms and houses burned in the Westfold... Gimli's axe got notched in that battle. Really, what tragedy could be greater?

Gimli is Gloin's son, which means he should have black hair, not brown. He's a great warrior, but unfortunately he doesn't actually have many 'deeds' of valor. He plays a significant role in many of the major battle of the War of the Ring, but nothing particularly dramatic. Helm's Deep is about the only hint we get of his prowess.

Of course, this picture doesn't show that anyway. I apologize for the rather un-epic entry in the "Deeds of the Dwarves" but the image got into my head and wouldn't leave. Maybe I'll do another picture later of him attacking the Orcs in the Deeping Wall. That's a pretty epic moment for him.

Next up is another Thorin picture. I'm actually a surprising distance on that one, so it shouldn't take as long for me to post.

The deed is not so much in the picture, but everything that led up to the picture. I like how he's sitting on a mountain of dead orcs, worried about his axe. Only a seasoned warrior could sit on a pile of corpses to check the state of his weapons.
